Akela 2016 kicks off today! Who are the volunteers behind the scene? Joy Hutchinson volunteers as a Support Team Leader, is part of the Training Team in Gauteng and an international Committee Member. At Akela 2016 she coordinates the communication and registration of all delegates!
SSA: How long have you been involved in the Scouting Movement?
I started as a Pack Helper in 1997.
SSA: Why did you join the Cubbing branch?
My eldest son started Cubs at 9th Benoni.
SSA: Name one of the most meaningful memories you have of your time in Cubbing?
Oh there are so many happy and memorable memories! But I think a very special one that stands out for me is when I was at 9th Benoni and we sponsored 2 Guide Dogs. We met the guide dogs as puppies and followed their progress. This really touched my heart.
SSA: What drives you to be of service to children?
I live, sleep and eat Scouting and am passionate about helping others. I have a deep sense of satisfaction when interacting with children.
SSA: What is the nicest thing a Cub has ever said to you?
“This is especially for you”. A Cub had brought me a beautiful stone (small garden rock) from his prize collection. I still have it today and it continually reminds me of how precious children are.
SSA: What makes a good Akela / Pack Scouter?
Someone who is committed and lives by the Promise and Law as well as knows what it is to have fun!
SSA: What are you personally looking forward to for Akela 2016?
The enjoyment of networking with all these wonderful Pack Scouters from around South Africa and abroad.
SSA: What do you hope Akela 2016 achieves?
That we continue to uphold the Aims and Values of the Scout Movement by sharing and caring to ensure that we pass on valuable insight to the next generation.
SSA: Lastly, we asked 100 Cubs what the weirdest thing is that they have eaten whilst on camp. What is the strangest think you have ever eaten outdoors?
I can’t recall eating anything gross at Cubs but at a Cultural Day at work I ate Mopani Worms!
