Rovers to explore Iceland and embrace Change

From the 25th of July to 2nd August 2017 twelve South African youths from Cape Town, Johannesburg and KwaZulu Natal will be attending the 15th World Scout Rover Moot in Iceland. Over 4600 people aged 18 to 25 from 95 countries will attend, as well as 1400 over 25’s who will form part of the International Service Team.

‘Change’, the theme of the 15th World Scout Moot signifies the impact that each individual can have on their communities and society as a whole. By participating in a large international event such as this, participants themselves are given the chance to grow and to expand their personal boundaries as they get to exChange cultural experiences, views and beliefs with peers from within the Scouting Movement. “In a world that is constantly evolving and changing, it is important for young adults to embrace change. Change is often a topic that is met with reservations and not openly accepted. In order for young adults to grow and develop a change in thought, actions or an approach to project can make all the difference in the outcome” explains SA Contingent leader Cameron Belling.

“The last Scout Moot was held in Canada in 2013, venturing to Iceland is a unique experience, as it is known as the land of fire and ice. Furthermore, this is a great experience for our SA senior Scouting youth – also known as Rovers – to attend. While internationally the Rover/ senior scout programme ends at 25 years, SA is the only country that extends this programme to people aged 35. So it will be interesting to share experiences”, elaborates Cameron.

In addition to various cultural and adventurous expeditions, the Rovers will also be embracing international friendship day on the 30th of July by showcasing our South African cultures, food and traditions alongside a variety of other nations.

It is clear that this will be the adventure of a lifetime for our participating youth. In addition to experiencing Iceland our SA Rovers will also spend five days in Amsterdam on their way home. “I’m looking forward to sharing Scouting experiences and ideas to better the youth in SA. I also view this as a great networking opportunity to align with people of similar mind-sets to improve and develop Scouting”, concludes Cameron.

Moots are held every four years and are organized by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). This year the event is hosted and organized by the Icelandic Boy and Girl Scout Association.
